BookShelf Statistics

Informations to the different Abouts...
(Version 1.5 - 10/01/2007)

The BookShelf-Statistics-Page has many hidden information: just point your mouse on a description, title, number and you'll get some more information if exist.

BTW: some information is gathered on next pages. Just follow the links...

About... book status.

There are 5 Status for books at BookCrossing.com:

TBR (to be read)
AVL (available
PC (personal collection)
RES (reserved)
TRAV (travelling)

Because these status were introduced as BookCrossing already exists 3 years, some books may also have "no status" at all. These books are counted in the NONE column.

We can distinguish between 4 levels:

1. Status set by the BookShelf-User on books registered by the BookShelf-User (and still in his possession).
2. Status set by the BookShelf-User on books registered by others (and now in his possession).
3. Status set by others on books registered by the BookShelf-User (had been released).
4. Status set by others on books registered by ohters (had been journaled & released).

Furthermore: every time throughout the page a status has been set by the BookShelf-User himself, it will be shown in the known colors.

About... books still in possession.

All books, which have any of the following status:

TBR (to be read)
AVL (available
PC (personal collection)
RES (reserved)

and have been SET BY the BookShelf-User, should be in his possession.

This counts for books registered by the BookShelf-User (and not released yet) as also for the books registered by others, which has been last journaled by the BookShelf-User.

And watch carefully: somewhere in this block, there are links, which even shows lists of those books...

About... books in the wild.

This is a bit tricky. First, you have to understand, that "in the wild" here has the meaning of having the status TRAV. There are 2 ways for a book for this status:

A. Someone has made a release note. The status TRAV is set automaticly, including following hint: "This book is currently in the wild"
B. Someone has switched the status to TRAV manually.

The numbers shown here is a snapshot on the books with status TRAV, meaning, that those books, which were released once and found and journaled by someone, don't reflect in this numbers. Also, these numbers belongs to the BookShelf-User only.

So, besides those 2 different TRAV-status, we still can distinguish 3 level each:

A1. Books registered by the BookShelf-User with a releasenote by him
A2. Books registered by the BookShelf-User, journaled by others, but the last releasenote by him
A3. Books registered by others and the last releasenote by the BookShelf-User
B1. Books registered by the BookShelf-User with no releasenote but status manually set to TRAV
B2. Books registered by the BookShelf-User, journaled by others, but the last journal with status manually set to TRAV by him
B3. Books registered by others and the last journal with status TRAV set by the BookShelf-User

About... book ratings.

People can rate a book. In the "All Books"-List, the rating shown is the mean value of all journals for that book. These values are counted, to show how many books haven't been rated, how many have been rated 1, up to 10. Distinguished between books registered by the BookShelf-User and books registered by others.

Back to previous page

About... journalers.

In the "All Books"-List there also is a counting for the total journaler of a book. This total in fact is the number of different people who wrote a journal or a releasenote (which is in fact a journal too) for a book. In other words: if e.g. Wyando writes 5 different journalers to one books, it will be counted as 1.

Distinguished between books registered by the BookShelf-User and books registered by others.

About... the register activity.

Simple and clear, huh? How many books have been registered month by month.

About... the release activity.

First an important remark:

Of course, it would also be very interesting, to know about the activity BookCrossing.com is all about: Releasing. But unfortunatly, this can not be calculated in an easy way and in a way that the BookCrossing-Servers would not slow down. Because these statistics are build from the "All Books" list, and this list shows only the latest status of a book. To know if a book has been released by the BookShelf-User (speaking of writing a releasenote), we must look into each book journal to catch the releasenote and its date. You can imagine, that this would consume a lot of time, as there are BookShelfs with thousends of books registered...

So what's this statistic about?

Quite simple too: the number of books, with a releasenote made by the BookShelf-User, which are still in the wild per month. THIS statistic can be very frustrating, huh? ;)

About... authors.

Top 25 of books from the same author. And if there exists at least 2 books for an author in this list, clicking their link will show you the list of books...

Distinguished between books registered by the BookShelf-User and books registered by others.

Co-authors are counted seperated. Alias are counted to there real names, if known. Misspellings have to be corrected in the book details.

Also, some, especially german, BookCrossers register books with "lastname, firstname". The script tries to detect this and recreates for this statistic a "firstname lastname" entry. This works only for simple "lastname, firstname" cases; e.g. "lastname, firstname initial" cannot be distinguished from a regular amazon entry like "firstname lastname, firstname lastname" (i.e. co-author). Whereby not always a firstname exists...

Update: 10.01.2007 Last paragraph isn't the telling the truth anymore ;) Meanwhile, I added a special correction procedure, to catch up those "lastname, firstname secondname" etc too. Works pretty well - as long as I add the obvisious titles manually... But I always get a look over the top25 Authors of each shelf I create or update - so this should be no problem :)

About... titles.

Top 25 of titles.

The title is linked with the latest registered version at the BookShelf. In this example you see the trick I (Wyando) made: the backtrack-link, which makes it possible to walk thru all the registered versions of this book at the Wyando's BookShelf.

note: This backtrack-link has not been created by this script, programm or whatever. One have to do this manually by using the "edit journal"-link at the books journals and adding something like this:

<div align="right" class="tinysansfixed">
<font color="#CCCCCC">Nr. <b>11</b>
<a class="nobold" href="http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/3272862">backtrack</a>
</font>
</div>

· Remember when using these 5 lines, that no "hard return" may be made for them - it should be one line (don't worry, the journals editor windows will split them up, that's ok, as long you do not use the "return key" to add a linebreak yourself.

· Also, you have to change that "11" to the number of the book it is

· And of course the journalnumber "3272862 to the number of the previous book it should be linked. And of course you have to add these lines in each equal book at your shelf.

I know, this is far from clear, but if you absolutly want a backtrack-mechanism for same books registered at your BookShelf, you'll find it out how it works with this words and the example :)

About... screennames (registered books).

Top 25 of other screennames with registered books at the Book-Shelf.

About... screennames (status set by).

Top 25 of other screennames who has set the last status on a book.

Distinguished between books registered by others and books registered by the BookShelf-User. The latter also distinguished by their bookstatus.

Interesting: I've already seen status set by the BookShelf-User, but wrongly declared to another screenname by bookcrossing.com, when looking at the pages in "logged off"-mode (the way this statisticscript sees the shelfs). After the BookShelf-User resets the status for that book (by switching it from the actual status to another one and back), BookCrossing.com recognize this and shows then the status correctly in "logged off"-mode. Well after the next update of the BookShelf-Statistic ofcourse... ;)

And watch carefully: somewhere in this block, there is a link, which shows a list of those books registered by the BookShelf-User and set to PC by someone else (which you can see by putting the mousepointer on a status)... ;)

About... bookrings, bookrays and bookboxes.

This is a real tricky one!

Be sure: this is only a guess! And it's about your own bookrings & co or those at the moment in your possession.

Also: if no statistics for BookRing, BookRay or BookBox are shown, then for reasons described below, nothing has been found...

There are 3 ways how this statisticprogram tries to know if a book is a ring, a ray or a box.

1. All titles are scanned to detect the words "BookRing", "BookRay" and "BookBox" (case insensitiv!).

2. You create a personal list of BookRings, BookRays and BookBoxes with on each line:

Second Part of the BCID:RING:
Second Part of the BCID:RAY:
Second Part of the BCID:BOX:

This list you send me, and only those bookrings, bookrays and bookboxes in this list will be shown in the statistic. Updates can be sent maximum once a month. (This implies not, that your BookShelf-Statistic will be updated each month! See also here!)

3. BookCrossers from the German speaking Area (and those only!), who register their BookRings, BookRays and BookBoxes at the German Support Site, will see this reflect in their BookShelf-Statistic. So called "closed" (Beendet) Rings, Rays and Boxed will not show up and so called "MIA" (Missing in Action, Verschollen) will be marked as "MIA". In case they send a personal list as mentioned in part 2 above, this personal list will have higher precedence as the information on the German Support Site (GSS).

And none of them are for sure. Because every BookCrosser can do, what he or she thinks is needed to make a ring, a ray or a book visible. And if that doesn't fit in the 3 ways described above, it won't show up in that statistic list! Also: the BookShelf-Statistics will be updated sporadic...

Part 2. and 3. can also be seen as a possibility for showing the BookRings, BookRays and BookBoxes from the BookShelf-User. Part 1. can also show those which have a status set by the BookShelf-User, meaning in his possession. (If the BookTitle mention the magic words!)

One thing is for sure: Bookrings, Rays and Boxes, which are registered by others, are colorized

If you, because of this unsure situation, wish, that your BookShelf-Statistic doesn't show these bookring, bookray and bookboxes, then let me know, and future updates will exclude these 3 lists :)
